Let's Talk About Other Topics: How to Improve Your Small Talk Skills

My go-to trick is to just start by talking about myself first. I’ll share a couple of personal stories or experiences upfront, instead of jumping straight into opinions about people or situations. It helps people get a feel for who I am, which naturally builds trust. Once that’s there, they’re way more likely to open up about themselves too. That gives me a good read on what they’re into and how they think, so it’s super easy to figure out what to talk about next.

Of course, you gotta have a solid head on your shoulders. I try to casually pick up new stuff in my downtime—finance, society, fashion, entertainment, industry trends, all of it. Just collect little tidbits here and there so I’ve got plenty to bounce off of.

On another note, chatting with people is genuinely fun when you let it be. When you actually enjoy the back-and-forth, you don’t need to stress over finding “the right topic.” It’s all just a slow buildup—interests naturally spill over into everyday little things. Honestly, there’s really no such thing as a dead-end conversation, only boring conversationalists.
